Mālama Pono — Be Well

We want to share with you why we cleared the calendar of all of our August performances and activities that were to have taken place in the theatre.

The recent surge of COVID cases since the Delta variant has reached our island has been dramatic and upsetting. The Department of Health now reports that Hawaii County has reached “community spread.” We no longer feel confident that the measures we have been taking to protect you when you come to the theatre are adequate to ensure your safety.

And for that reason, the leadership of our organization – Chuck, Sara, and our Board of Directors, decided it would be best to shut down all in-person performances at the theatre for the month of August. We were not shut down by any authority. We simply made a proactive decision to take what we think is the responsible course of action.

In addition to the wonderful musical experiences and community events we had planned, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to cancel Matilda the Musical. This production was absolutely wonderful! It had so many talented actors and creators in the cast and crew. Honestly, this was an agonizing decision, and one we did not make lightly.

The only consolation is that the keiki who worked so diligently and creatively on this production gained skills and friendships from the experience… and we cannot wait to have them back at Kahilu in the future for other shows and classes.

Since home is the safest place right now, at least we can offer some of our arts and entertainment experiences via Kahilu.TV, which you can watch on your television using easy-to-use apps… or if you must, on a computer or your smart phone. Just type in Kahilu.TV. There are a lot of free access programs there as well.

We are rescheduling the shows that we are able to, and we promise to stay in touch. For now, we just hope that you and your ‘ohana stay well. We look forward to seeing you again on the other side of this pandemic surge so we can create and share creative experiences together again.

Mālama Pono… Be Well.
