Madeline Schatz-Harris Youth Concerto Competition Winner Performances
Irminsul – The Three Virtues of Zarathustra
Jean Sibelius – Finlandia

Concert Description
When looking around our island, there are many talents that we could come across every day from our neighbors, friends, and ‘ohana. This performance features the very talented young winners of this year’s annual Madeline Schatz-Harris Youth Concerto Competition. Every year, the talent level displayed by these young students is remarkable, and this concert is a perineal fan favorite. The Philharmonic will also highlight a Hilo-based composer, Irminsul, in the World Premiere performance of his The Three Virtues of Zarathustra. A multimovement work that takes us through the virtues of “Good Thoughts,” “Good Words,” and “Good Deeds,”—virtues we should all strive to embrace. A beautiful and thought-provoking introspective that touches the soul.

Throughout history, music has been used as a call to action or a quiet and subversive patriotic reminder. In Jean Sibelius’ Finlandia, we see such a work. During the late 1800’s Finland was heavily weighted under Czar Nicholas II, and the people of Finland were fighting for their freedoms. Sibelius’ music
became a rallying point for this movement. The piece takes the listener on a journey through this oppression culminating in a triumphant ending.
