This week, we are excited to share that our galleries will be open to the public! Kahilu Exhibits will present Kipaipai Fellows 2020, a curated group exhibition, from September 28 to November 8, 2020. Museum Manager and Curator at the Lancaster Museum of Art and History Andi Campognone will curate the exhibit from past participants in Kipaipai Workshops. Kipaipai, meaning “to encourage and inspire,” is a professional development program for artists, co-founded and led by Andi Campognone.

There are 18 artists in the exhibit from Oahu, Maui and Hawai’i Island. Participating artists are: Joy RayCudra CloverAlex CouwenbergMichael ShewmakerScott YoellMargo Ray, Gina HartigDina ClineMichelle Schwengel-RegalaLaurie SumiyeBailey FergusonCaroline KillhourValerie KimStephanie SachsMarcia PasquaDonna Zarbin Byrne, Diana Nicholette Jeon, and Jodi Endicott.

The Kipaipai Fellows 2020 exhibit will be installed in the newly renovated Simperman and Hamakua Galleries at the Kahilu Theatre. The renovations are part of Kahilu Theatre’s Capital Improvement Project, which is funded by the State of Hawai’i. In lieu of a physical opening reception, there will be a live Facebook exhibition talk with participating artists at 4 pm Friday, September 25. The virtual event is free and open to the public.

The Hawai’i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts has approved a virtual visit by an Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) to consider the purchase of artwork from the exhibit for the Art in Public Places Collection. Kahilu Theatre will document the exhibition and will be presenting ongoing digital content for those that cannot view the exhibit in person.

The Kahilu Galleries are free and open to the public on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to 1pm for the duration of the exhibition at 67-1186 Lindsey Road, Kamuela, Hawai’i. Viewers are required to wear masks, have their temperature taken upon entry, and maintain social distancing; no more that 10 people at a time will be allowed in the galleries.

The 2020 Kahilu Exhibits program is sponsored by Mollie and Jim Hustace, Keaolani Keawe, Pau Pizza, Kamuela Hardwoods, Woodbury Inspection Group, and the Fairmont Orchid. We are grateful for their support!

We're in the last week of the month. Don't forget to sign over your Foodland coupon for a $5 donation (or make your own donation) to Kahilu Theatre as part of the Give Aloha program at all Foodland and Sack N Save stores in the State (more details below).
